Gearing Up Like a Real Equestrian
Equestrians are skilled horse
riders. Equestrians are the men and women who ride horses both for fun
and for competitions. Women equestrians are referred to as equestriennes.
But technically speaking, everybody who knows how to ride a horse can
be considered an equestrian, in a way.
Learning the proper way to
ride a horse requires talent and patience. But that's not all there
is to it. Equestrians need to instill a special bond with their horses
too. And of course, you can't be a good equestrian without wearing the
proper outfit and getting all geared up for it.
Here's a list of the things you need if you want to get on a horse:
1. Equestrian clothing
If you just want to go out
riding as a hobby, any nice fitting shirt or blouse and a matching sweater
should do it. It it's hot, you can settle for a vest. But for competitions,
you might want to wear show shirts and jackets, complete with trousers.
The best trousers to use are the skinny but comfortable types, as they
allow you sit perfectly on top of the horse with a nice grip.
2. Riding hat
A riding hat is important.
Never ever go out riding without head protection. Even expert equestrians
use them, as there is no telling when your good old horse would act
up on you. Riding hats are so important that it needs to be measured
accurately so as to sit in your head perfectly. Equestrian riding hats
are sold in different sizes. Try to measure your head's circumference
to find the perfect fit.
3. Riding Boots
You'll recognize an equestrian
from a far with his headgears and riding boots. Boots are as essential
as hats. It serves as protection for the rider while mounting and dismounting
the horse. Boot clips are sold separately. But aside from that, it is
where the spurs are attached. The spurs play an important role in the
horse's discipline.
4. Horse equipment
Yes, you need to dress up your
horse too. In fact, it is the horse that's the star in an equestrian
competition. Some of the equipments you need for your horse are saddles,
fringes, fly masks, grazing muzzles, bandages and pads, hoof boots,
and girths. Keep in mind that these are worn on horses for a reason
and due to aesthetic purposes. They are worn in order to keep the horse
comfortable throughout the ride, thus keeping both of you safe and sound.
5. Bits, Stirrups, and Spurs
Bits are the horse's mouthpieces
held in place by the bridle and the reins. It allows the rider to control
the horse. Stirrups are the rider's footrest. It can be found attached
on a leather strap coming from the saddle. Spurs are the metal spikes
attached to the heels of the riding boots. Riders use it to instruct
the horse to move forward or sideways. It plays an important role in
teaching the horse to obey its master.
